horchata horchata horchata

It seems that every time I turn around lately, I see another article about horchata, a traditional Mexican beverage made with milk, rice, and a hint of cinnamon. And so I have become obsessed. And the only way to get over my obsession is to blog about it.

Doesn't horchata sound delicious? I have only tried it once, where it was called chicha, a Venezuelan version described as a "delicious sweet and thick drink made out of rice with cinnamon on top." It was very rich, like a milkshake-meets-rice pudding. You can try one at Caracas Arepa Bar on 7th Street in the East Village. While you are there, you should also try an arepa, and the Venezuelan style chips and guacamole. Bring a friend and dine in. It is a great little place. You will not believe how small the tables are. But then again, if you have dined anywhere in the East Village before, you will be used to it.

I was so excited to find a packaged version of horchata, and Coffee Horchata no less, on the Kern's Website. But then sad to find that Kern's horchata is only available in California, Arizona and Nevada. If you live in these western states, try it and tell me how you like it!
