current shoe obsession
alas, the sneaker. (because I live in nyc and walk a ton!) but not too sneakery of a sneaker. more of a sneaker disguised as a shoe, like a mary jane style or a high-tech looking black one with a metallic accent. how about Royal Elastics? I must go try some on. I really like the non-sneakeryness of their styles.

8 ferry tickets and counting

Note to self: 8 ferry tickets expire on 11/12. I can see it now, scalping ferry tickets on the dock, getting arrested, being rather late to work...

Other note to self: stop buying 10-trips.

ginger and the y

I am making progress with Tina Louise. (Yes, *that* Tina Louise. Ginger from Gilligan's Island and I go to the same Y. Near the UN.) Yesterday, as I turned the corner from my locker bank towards hers, she did not give me the stink eye as she has for the last three years. She even gave me a half-smile! Perhaps it was involuntary, but still. I walked toward the pool a little bit giddy thinking Ginger just half-smiled at me.

I am definitely cracking her shell. By averting my eyes, giving her not-knowing-glances and the like.

star sighting! and you know how i get

Oh, I meant to mention! Richard Kind asked me for directions in my neighborhood yesterday! I was coming up the subway stairs behind a slow-moving man. He stopped at the top of the stairs and put up his umbrella. I moved around him. He said, "Which way is East?" I gave him a startled look, like I don't know, oh wait, you're Richard Kind! He made a sound like, yeah, calm down, I know I'm Richard Kind, and asked me again more pointedly. I said, "Well, that way's the East River." Luckily I figured that one out. No one asks which way is East in Brooklyn. It's not Manhattan. Sheesh.

Can you believe this is a citron? Amazing! Called "Buddha's Hand" -- I guess citrons are kinda sorta spiritually symbolic. Significance #1. Significance #2.

venus, goddess of love

Making the gold bracelets. All machine sewing. Velcro closures.
(Of course, I had to make the accessories first! I ♥ accessories)

Maybe Hermes (the fashion company, not the Greek God) will include these
in their line? I thought Sofia needed bracelets for sure. Every good costume
needs matching bracelets.

I am making my downstairs neighbor, Sofia's Halloween costume this year! She is 9, and she is going as Venus, Goddess of Love. I should also add that we've been discussing this for a month. She came to me with a stack of sketches and very specific ideas as to color palette and design details. I got all the stuff yesterday, and she said it was just what she was thinking! I don't know who was more excited (me, I think!!) Yes, she wants to be a fashion designer because of me. When I was showing her all the fabrics and trim yesterday, she ran to her room to whip of another sketch. It was far better than mine. I have to get a picture of her sketch.

Here's the headpiece! I worked on this for 1.5 hours. I sewed some on the bus,
and some on the subway. All hand-sewn. White/gold twist braid, gold leaf vine trim,
gold lingerie elastic for stretch (sizing). It fit her! She loved it!
