current shoe obsession
alas, the sneaker. (because I live in nyc and walk a ton!) but not too sneakery of a sneaker. more of a sneaker disguised as a shoe, like a mary jane style or a high-tech looking black one with a metallic accent. how about Royal Elastics? I must go try some on. I really like the non-sneakeryness of their styles.

mini vase

Technically this is for the bath. But I think it makes a cool vase. I am so tempted to get three of these. But why three? Well, because they're only 4 bucks. Yes, I'm passing along the savings to myself. And I think because they're small, they'd look good in a series, along the middle of the table. Or in a nice cluster. I definitely think three would come in handy. I don't know. I may buy none. But then again, I may buy three.

love this

I love this silver pouf. Not your typical Moroccan styling, but I like the simplicity. Who knew Amazon sold silver poufs? What don't they sell?

Okay, I like this one too. Which to choose? Both from Casablanca Market on Amazon.

if fruit is nature's candy, then fruit pillows are...

... nature's soft-sculpture? You fill in your own blank. In any event, Jonathan Adler does it again with a witty embroidered series of fruit pillows. Take your pick of the bunch. On the flip side of each pillow, more wittiness, and oh-so-pleasing design. Click here to view.

another item for your vegetarian hunting lodge

Through the magic of internet clicking, I found the very same cardboard mounted deer from the now defunct Brooklyn restaurant on Smith Street I photographed in 2006. On Modcloth! Filed under "Apartment" (not "Home"). I like their specificness. Specificity. Yes.

but yes

But I could love this tissue box. Yes indeed-y. I saw it at the MoMA store last night. But don't really buy it for me. As it stands now, my tissue box sits on top of the radiator, and I think it would discolor or something unfortunate like that. Yes, the burden of owning. (My current mindset, for some reason. I'm sure it will pass.)

no

I could not own this tissue box cover, knowing there is "Hate" on the other side. I could not hate in the bathroom. It is so un-harmonious.

I want this. But I am not buying anything in February. Too much stuff. I've been having fun shredding instead. But this pagoda pillow by Jonathan Adler is really right up my alley. Funny, I was thinking of stopping by his site today. Instead I stopped by BussBuss and found it there.

branch chandelier

The Branch Chandelier, in a warm golden light shows off the gold-leafed
hand-blown glass teardrops that hang from the bronze-colored branches.

The Branch Chandelier, bathed in a cool light.
Asymmetric and evocative.

A beautiful chandelier makes all the difference in a room. So why do apartments come with the most basic of fixtures with the most fluorescent of bulbs? If I had the guts to do some rewiring, which I don't, I would invest in a chandelier. This one, from ABC Carpet and Home is perhaps a bit out of my price range at $12,000, but is right up my aesthetic alley. The Branch Chandelier, made in Italy. Find it opposite the main entrance on the first floor.

shop & compare: john derian

John Derian's decoupage plates

Inside John Derian Company Inc in the East Village,
there are curious objects everywhere you look.

I love how Bergdorf Goodman recreated John Derian's signature aesthetic on the 7th floor last Tuesday to showcase the decoupage designer's debut furniture collection. So much so that I wanted to pay a visit to Derian's East Village shops, and study his smaller design objects more closely. He has two shops right next store to each other on 2nd Street, between Bowery and 2nd Avenue.

If you are shopping for one of Derian's decoupage designs, there is certainly no shortage of selection at his store. Wow! The density of the objects displayed is heady. The mix of objects is pleasing too: Astier de Villatte terracotta slip-glazed pottery (modern yet with a 19th century quality) are displayed alongside "finger sponges" and other natural objects that look more like scientific curiosities than things you can purchase. But purchase them, you can. I especially love the wall of "mushroom consoles" made by Mark St. Clair near the back of the store on the left.

John Derian's retail design and unique aesthetic seems to borrow from Charles Wilson Peale's ideas about museum displays (he was a naturalist and a painter; see this painting). When I browse through Derian's store, I feel like I am in a museum of ethnography from the late 19th century. There is a curious mix of curious objects excavated from times past, displayed in wood-frame glass vitrines where the glass has melted a bit. There is an overwhelming amount of objects to explore and the room can start to close in on you, but it is worth the time spent discovering.

zak!

I have a thing for Zak! Ultra smooth. Pleasing to the touch. Affordable well-designed tablewear made of melamine. For example, just look at these ice cream spoons, which I purchased recently at Food Emporium (for $7.49). They make the experience of eating oatmeal much more exciting. The Food Emporium Bridgemarket carries many pieces from my favorite "Seaside Collection." I have had my eye on a set of bright sky blue serving spoons and matching giant bowl to use for fancy salads (or better yet, fancy pasta salads). The color would go great with red salad plates. Think of the dinner party possibilities! I do. If I talk much more about this, I will be running right over to Food Emporium and buying up a storm.

Right next door at The Conran Shop, you can shop Zak's latest "Confetti Group," pictured above. I love the oval-shaped drinking cups. A set of 6 is around $20. Also available on Amazon and Target, for those who don't get that far East.

accessorize your fridge

After clicking through a series of colorful images on Hostess with the Mostess, I found this set of Mosaic Storage Containers by French Bull. Having just cleaned my fridge to the point of sparkling spaciousness last week (I keep opening the door to admire my handiwork), I think these containers would be a nice addition. Is it uncool to talk about melamine on Earth Day? Look at it this way: they would certainly cut down on plastic wrap consumption...

Drat. Out of stock. Oh well, I can wait. Or I could get the polka-dotted set. And the serving spoons. And the matching plates. French Bull always creates a snowball effect of desire in me.

cb2 white square dinnerware

This CB2 white square dinnerware seems to be popular with NYC restaurants. I keep noticing it everywhere I eat. After test-driving it, I think I would like to add some pieces to my own cupboard. Like all three sizes of the bowls and all four sizes of the plates. Have you noticed the prices? $4.95 for a dinner plate, $1.95 for a dessert plate, $2.95 for a 6" bowl. Those are nice prices. The prospect of purchasing makes me want to have a party.

french bull

Can you believe these beautiful plates by French Bull are paper? I think I would feel compelled to wash them and save them. Well perhaps I wouldn't go that far. But I am afraid that as lovely as they are, they would fall into the 'too nice to use' category in my house. The melamine plates by French Bull, however, I wholeheartedly support. Ooh la la. Reusable is sexy.

coral camo

I like the way the coral pattern on this pillow 'morphs' into camouflage. A most inventive combination of two of my favorite patterns.

In other news, here's how I chose to mix down the camouflage. I must make a new coral necklace to go along with the ensemble. That gives me food for thought.
