alas, the sneaker. (because I live in nyc and walk a ton!) but not too sneakery of a sneaker. more of a sneaker disguised as a shoe, like a mary jane style or a high-tech looking black one with a metallic accent. how about Royal Elastics? I must go try some on. I really like the non-sneakeryness of their styles.

plastics. not so much.

On Thursday, I had a freakout about plastics after reading this article. And so I ditched my plastic water cup at work in favor of this glass PBA-free water bottle, with rad silicone sleeve. It's by Lifefactory, a French company. I'm happy with it. No off-gassing into my drinking water. That is a good thing.

another great design by ronan & erwan bouroullec

Panier by Kartell, designed by Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec

I would consider owning this coffee table. I do have a penchant for plastic, after all. Although it is becoming increasingly uncool to like plastics. What to do??

penchant for plastics: ny skyline

I don't know why supermarkets want to eliminate plastic bags. Without plastic bags, we could not have this New York skyline on the Pulaski Bridge.

Please note: If you look closely, you will notice that I lined up the Empire State Building with the Empire State Building.

a tree grows in brooklyn...

...Or does it? I was pleased when I saw that someone was trying to beautify the neighborhood. This tree hole on the corner of Greenpoint Avenue and Franklin Street was in need, and someone filled that need with this plastic palm. I had no objection to it. But someone else did. Why uproot a tree, even if it is plastic?

zak!

I have a thing for Zak! Ultra smooth. Pleasing to the touch. Affordable well-designed tablewear made of melamine. For example, just look at these ice cream spoons, which I purchased recently at Food Emporium (for $7.49). They make the experience of eating oatmeal much more exciting. The Food Emporium Bridgemarket carries many pieces from my favorite "Seaside Collection." I have had my eye on a set of bright sky blue serving spoons and matching giant bowl to use for fancy salads (or better yet, fancy pasta salads). The color would go great with red salad plates. Think of the dinner party possibilities! I do. If I talk much more about this, I will be running right over to Food Emporium and buying up a storm.

Right next door at The Conran Shop, you can shop Zak's latest "Confetti Group," pictured above. I love the oval-shaped drinking cups. A set of 6 is around $20. Also available on Amazon and Target, for those who don't get that far East.

accessorize your fridge

After clicking through a series of colorful images on Hostess with the Mostess, I found this set of Mosaic Storage Containers by French Bull. Having just cleaned my fridge to the point of sparkling spaciousness last week (I keep opening the door to admire my handiwork), I think these containers would be a nice addition. Is it uncool to talk about melamine on Earth Day? Look at it this way: they would certainly cut down on plastic wrap consumption...

Drat. Out of stock. Oh well, I can wait. Or I could get the polka-dotted set. And the serving spoons. And the matching plates. French Bull always creates a snowball effect of desire in me.

tote your cupcakes in style

All three luscious layers of The Cupcake Courier, pictured in situ.

For the utterly cupcake-obsessed, you now can get help.

Help in transporting your cupcake booty, that is!*

You no longer have to limit yourself to just one dainty treat. With the pleasingly plastic Cupcake Courier, you can finally buy the three dozen cupcakes you always dream about, but feel too un-stylish doing so. And with The Cupcake Courier in hand, how could you not fill each and every cupcake placeholder?** You can always tell them that you are a mom purchasing for your child's class party.

Or you could actually be a mom doing just that. The Cupcake Courier was created, designed and developed by mom, Jennifer Gunn who was "in need of a product to safely transport the gazillions of cupcakes" she took to her children's various functions. Gunn is a clever Momtrepreneur indeed.

The Cupcake Courier comes in four fab colors, as pictured above, and measures a tote-friendly 12.5"x16"x14". My favorite modular feature: each cupcake tray is removable, so you can transport a cake too. It seems subway-friendly, the way each cupcake is nestled safely in its own 3"x1.1" cup. Gunn's product is doing so well, three of the four colors are currently sold out on her Web site. Pink is available now for $32.95. That would be my color choice anyway.

My fashion prediction: The Cupcake Courier will become the new pooch purse. Can't you see it now? I can.

*How quickly I change my tune from Ayurveda to cupcakes. Hmm.
**Is your mouth watering yet? Mine is. I am just one subway ride away from Crumbs as I write this.

up-close and personal with the door handles at fendi

I was walking along the designer blocks of 5th Avenue one day and became very enthralled with the door handles at Fendi. The materials, the shape, the sizable size. All quite statement-making. The materials remind me of Japanese laquerware that is sprinkled with gold leaf, and all of it suspended in a resin. Clearly, it was my penchant for plastics that drew me closer.

As I photographed the door handles, many people slowed to take a closer look, and also appreciated them. That was a nice chain reaction I was pleased to have caused.

pink plastic piggies

I have a penchant for plastics. Especially shiny cute objects made of clear plastic. If you ask me, it is a bit of an unnatural addiction.

These pink and blue piggy banks are currently on sale at The Container Store for $3.99. I could imagine buying a lot of them, filling them with candy, and giving them away as favors. Wouldn't peanut M&Ms look nice in these pink piggies? (They even show them filled with chocolate coins on The Container Store Website. Funny, my mind went right to chocolate-filled piggies too, before I even saw the photo on the Website. Because who would put mere money in such a cute piggy?)

Anyway, I didn't invest in the banks. But I might, if I can think of a good use for them. Maybe I could just buy one to display with my giant beckoning cat? Can I justify bringing home yet another shiny plastic object...? Maybe I should consult the Magic Eight Ball.

karim rashid

Karim Rashid, master designer of all things plastic, shiny, rounded, smooth and brightly-colored, is a leading figure in the fields of product, interior design, fashion, furniture, lighting and art. As I too have a penchant for plastic, I am naturally drawn to his designs. Take a look at his Website. The interiors he designed are as colorful as a marketplace in India. Or plan a field trip to one of the restaurants he designed and explore all the colorful curves in person.

holiday decor: laser-cut snowflakes

I have a guy who does all kinds of amazing laser-cut plexi shapes. I can't tell you my source, because he makes special shapes for me for my Limited Edition Necklaces. Like the three on this page. Let your fingers do the clicking. Perhaps you will find a nice gift or two.

Anyway, my latest acquisition are these laser-cut plexi snowflakes. I love them. I love looking at them. I love plastic. It can be said that I have a penchant for plastic. I have so many ideas for these little shiny shapes. I have already put them to good use as coasters and various table accents. I plan to hang some in the window along with some hanging tealights that I have coming in the mail. When that arrangement is up and ready, I will be sure to show you. I must admit, I am most excited about my snowflakes as coasters. Who else will have laser-cut plexi snowflake coasters made by my secret source? I think I need to get more snowflakes. You can never have too many!

penchant for plastic

Yes I have a penchant for plastic! Especially when it comes to accessories. Today, we introduced 3 new pieces in our Plexi Silhouettes Series. These 3 necklaces will be available exclusively on elaineperlov.com (Actually, they are available now, as of this posting. The e-mail to our Premiere and Preferred Customer will go out next week, so if you happen to be reading, you can be the first to click and shop. gee)

Each Limited Edition piece is laser cut in high-shine plexi. The sterling silver chain is 32" so you can wear it long as a pendant, or wrap it around twice as a choker. We like convertible jewelry. Try these new pieces with your Geisha Top if you got one before it sold out, or with the similarly styled Camouflage V-Neck, currently in stock and ready to ship.

And don't forget to check out the HOT ITEMS this week.

what a bargain

If you were a fan of Woolworth's (and who wasn't?), you would love Dee & Dee. Chances are you have never been to one. Chances are there is one in your neighborhood that you walk past once a week or so. You must go. Why? The prices! And the very great merchandise. What's not to like? Pocket tissue packs @ 10 for $1, ironing boards, full length mirrors, plush bath towels for $4, strange close-out items (those are the best), and even some interesting placemats at times.

This week, they have some specials that I wanted to share with you, if you happen to live in Brooklyn, Queens, or Manhattan. Perhaps there are more Dee & Dee stores that I don't know about. Let me know if you have one near you! Let me know of your own Dee & Dee story. Here are the goodies that I thought were pretty nice. I'll let the pictures do the talking.

can you believe it? $1.99!

I would choose the orange cups and the ice blue bowls.

good morning!

If you are just waking up to my blog, you have a bit of back reading to do. I posted quite a bit last night, to make up for not posting much on Monday and Tuesday. You see, I am thinking about you. :-) I have been working like crazy. Excited about all of my new projects, and excited about having a venue to show my latest designs every weekend for the next 4 weeks. There is nothing like an audience to ignite production.

So anyway, this is my new morning set-up with my favorite coffee cup and peanut butter toast plate. The cup is vintage, Russell Wright "Residential" by Northern (made in Boston!). Don't you just love Russell Wright? Plus anything plastic I have a thing for. I will call my autobiography, Penchant for Plastic. Really! The red plate, melamine. The placemat, real wood but faux grain. The other placemat, tomatoes! Purchased at The Block at Orange. OC, California. The tablecloth. Made by me. 100% linen. With those pertinent details digested, happy Wednesday! I have more work to do. Will be back later with a sneak peak at my ad running on Spree Dallas that begins tomorrow.
