The light this time of year is incredible. Don't you think? Also the use of orange for a restaurant, be it awnings, umbrellas, tables, chairs, always makes me salivate. Am I the only one? I think orange must be connected with fine dining in my brain somehow.

Details from Passing Through, the 115-foot mosaic mural by Al Held (2004) inside the Lexington Avenue-53rd Street station. Each section is an incredibly strong composition on its own; seen altogether it is spectacular. Take the E, V or 6 and come up for a viewing. Enjoy your Friday.

a seat on the V train

I am always pleased when I can ride the V instead of the E train in the morning, not only because it is less crowded and cooler, but because it has a better color scheme. Yes, that may sound strange. That I love the color scheme of a subway.

But think about it. The orange and the faux woodgrain color scheme that you can find on the V and a number of other lines is gloriously modern. Take a look at the lobby (pictured below) at the Doubletree Metropolitan Hotel in Midtown.

You may remember that I have written about this hotel before, singing the praises of the mosaic door handles on the 51st Street side. There are many nice juxtapositions of orange and woodgrain in the lobby, recently redone to reflect the Mid-century modern look in which the hotel was originally designed in 1961. And when the lobby gets crowded, it looks somewhat like the V. Except I can always get a seat on the V.

If you stand at Noguchi's Cube at 140 Broadway in Lower Manhattan, and look further downtown, you can see this monumental incredible work in orange and steel. I also wanted to show you what really goes on at the base of the sculpture. This touched me. The sculpture is part of the fabric of the street. It is loved.

The hungry tourist is dazed and can only see the Halal cart.
I think he has failed to notice the monumental orange sculpture entirely.
Maybe after he eats, he will regain consciousness.

And the sculpture's leg serves to protect and cradle the doors of the halal cart
as they provide food to the hungry wandering tourists.
A wonderful symbiotic relationship.
You won't see this detail shot in the art books.

I do have a thing for orange. Both in public sculpture and in furniture. This piece by Creazioni is certainly a show-stopper. I am excited and rather pleased with the writing in this article.

Spring means a free Dunkin' Donuts iced coffee (I got mine yesterday), Spring cleaning, and new shoes. For the past 2 days, I have been weeding excess belongings, recycling old magazines, hemming pants, and dusting.

Above, a freshly dusted arrangement: tiki Buddha, kiri wood trivet, silver wishbone and orange metal trivet. Below, the magazine stack, considerably weeded. Really!

In the interest of being true to my credo, maximize your minimalism!, I am allowing myself two new plants this season to fill the empties. (The orange one already holds my mini-lawn you see.) I found four of these planters at various thrifty venues around Massachusetts, including the Brimfield Antique Show, which is coming this May 9-14. This is a super show, if you have never been.

The blue pot in back with the chrysanthemums comes from Petal & Leaf in Jamaica Plain. The vase on the table in the post below, also Petal & Leaf. These kiri trays too. If you are in my old neighborhood, pay Kat a visit and tell her I say hi. Her selection is very East-meets-West. She did the flowers for our wedding!
