current shoe obsession
alas, the sneaker. (because I live in nyc and walk a ton!) but not too sneakery of a sneaker. more of a sneaker disguised as a shoe, like a mary jane style or a high-tech looking black one with a metallic accent. how about Royal Elastics? I must go try some on. I really like the non-sneakeryness of their styles.

soft sculpture street art, part 2

And here's the other side of that crochet street art piece in Williamsburg. But I'm pretty sure the letters have been rearranged by some sort of vandal with crafting skills. I think they once spelled out "imagine" or other hopeful sentiment. ‪#‎streetart‬ ‪#‎crochet‬ ‪#‎brooklyn‬

Or maybe "the magic"? Well, the magic is gone because someone stole the letters. And the vibrancy of the yarn has certainly faded too.

for heaven's sakes it's sculpy. sculpy!

Sculpy Bird perched up high on Franklin Street, Greenpoint, Brooklyn. I think I have documented all of Sculpy's oeuvre (now extant, as the kids say) in the Williamsburg/Greenpoint area. Five pieces in all. Stay tuned. #streetart #greenpoint

on the way to the farmer's market

On the way to the farmer's market today, we spotted this brand new graffiti. And it is pure and untouched. Not for long in Greenpoint, so enjoy it here. I just love old-fashioned supermarket signage.

they say obama-ize, i say shepard fairey-ize

Yes, you know the famous portrait of Obama, HOPE.
Well you can do it to yourself too.
You can customize your own text and adjust all the colors.
Here's mine. Cactus in the background. I like the curl above my
eyebrow.

I saw this style portrait on someone's Facebook page recently, and to find how to do it myself, all I had to type into Google was, "How to Obama-ize your picture." Little does the public know, Obama isn't the artist behind this style of portrait. It is Shepard Fairey of Andre the Giant Has a Posse fame. Sheesh. Credit where credit is due, please. Obviously Shepard Fairey is one of my heros. Just look at my sketchy-style over-Xeroxed artwork turned into stickers. Here's one.

Oh well. Do it to yourself, here.

This is fun. I can't stop making these.
Sorry Shepard.

This one's my fave. I love how my barrette shows.
And the Eames chairs in the background.

Okay last one. For now.
Nice! The mosaic in the background came through.

peru ana ana peru

Filmstrip board - Mistinguette [from peruanaanaperu's Flikr page]
the frames on this board can be animated. to see it, click here

Have you seen "Peru Ana Ana Peru" tagged all over the place in Brooklyn and in the L station? I never had any idea what it meant until today when I found them on Twitter. Everyone has a Twitter account. Even taggers.

I was happy to find out that they are not just taggers. They are artists concerned with the art of film and the like. Check out a video called (godard) in chinatown, n.y.c. on their YouTube channel to learn more. Good stuff. Very good stuff.

About (godard) in chinatown, n.y.c.

"this is an enquiry about the future of the cinema."

the audio voice over for this video is taken from a 1982 wim wenders film titled "room 666" which features various filmmakers in a hotel room speaking on some aspect of filmmaking and/or the industry that supports it. in this case, the filmmaker is jean-luc godard, whose entire speech can be seen here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3hdAcx...

clips are taken from various commercials, tv shows, and films. the eisenstein footage is from 'battleship potemkin' but is re-edited to our liking. the footage that appears during the 'small movies' portion of the voice over is from 'taris' by jean vigo, which can be seen in its entirety here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=as4VI8...

the rest of the footage was filmed in chinatown, new york, on a cool late summer day, using two indonesian happen-alongs that were gracious enough to participate.

street toast strikes again

I was so happy to find Street Toast again, at last. In the interest of full disclosure, I cleaned up the image a bit. It had been mercilessly tagged. Normally, I leave the work in the state that I find it; however, I wanted to admire Street Toast in its less-tampered-with form. Oh if I only got a picture of the great 3-D version last year. Who doesn't love toast?

Photographed on Berry in Williamsburg.

chalk guy in greenpoint

Before the big rains come today to wash it all away, I bring you two bikes and a fire hydrant by the chalk man of Greenpoint, Ellis G. Well I don't know if he is specifically 'of Greenpoint' but that is where I see his work. Apparently he is known for "his chalk outlines of thousands of objects across Brooklyn." He has a MySpace page. Check it out. He calls himself Gee. gee

If you are just tuning in now, you missed his collaborative show with DJ Kimyon at Paloma last night. Perhaps there will be photos of "Mixture" posted on someone's blog today.

talk zori

I found these images of Saipan on Talk Zori, and had to share them. Particularly on a dark post-daylight savings day like today, when we are due for our first dusting of snow. I love the 'double happiness' hanging beads. I am sure Urban Outfitters will copy them, if they haven't already. Or just import them from Saipan. And how about the incredible graffiti!

street art coaster

This is an interesting image. You can find it on elsewheres.com on a set of 'street art coasters' that are handmade in LA. I guess I like anything with birds and scissors. But the juxtaposition makes for a compelling image.

slice of life

A typical street sign on a quiet street in Brooklyn. Had this been a busier street, there would have been more stickers.

Please note the fine points: the existing 'clean up after your dog' sign has been painted over with cream-colored latex paint (now peeling) to create a blank canvas of sorts for the artist's self-expression. Who was the first tagger to claim this sign? We may never know. Please also take a moment to enjoy the long cartouche-shaped piece in the upper left by my favorite street artist, Dark Clouds.

street toast

For the life of me, I can't figure out what anyone would have against this once piece of buttered toast. This was one of my all time favorite pieces of street art. Who wouldn't love buttered toast? Anyway, I thought I should photograph it before it was ripped down entirely. But I was too late.

I am so sad.

the pencil artist writes a third time

Yes, I spotted the over-sharpened pencil in a third location. He/she is getting bolder with the scribble. I shrieked with excitement. Out loud! Nobody looked. It's New York.
