last supper?

Well at least there is blogging until the phone and computer connection fail. Pre-emptive blogging! And now pizza! Tonight's pizza à la Irene includes artichokes, fresh mozzarella, zucchini, fresh basil and other goodies.

pizza

This was one terrific pizza that my husband made. Artichoke, zucchini, fresh mozzarella and a bright garlicky tomato sauce. And probably some other secrets like two spicy olives or three almonds chopped finely. How I miss it. I wish I were eating a slice right now.

Just to elaborate on the previous news-heavy Twitter-based post, Paulie Gee's is opening on 60 Greenpoint Avenue (Franklin & West Streets) at 6pm tonight. I can hardly contain my excitement! Read all about it on Slice. That is until I put my two cents in.

brooklyn flea in full swing

The Brooklyn Flea was bigger and better than ever this past Saturday, with more food vendors than I could have shook a stick at. Why do we only have one stomach? It isn't fair. The greatest new addition, in my humble opinion, is the mobile brick oven pizza by Pizza Moto. Just $8 for a pizza built for two. I thought it was the same vendor as in the Atlantic Antic last year, but apparently that was Lunetta. I will have to do more research. In the meantime, get thee to the Brooklyn Flea. Same location as last year. (Fort Greene; G to Clinton/Washington) This year, Saturdays. (Last year, Sundays.)

park ave yolato now golosi

The 'pizza by the inch' looks pretty darn appetizing.

I read on Midtown Lunch Thursday (just a bit too late for lunch, too bad) that there was a pizza with free gelato deal to be had in Midtown just below Grand Central. And then I read:

The Yolato looking signs are still up, so it probably is the same gelato as before (but I can’t say that for sure).

What? Yolato is gone? My favorite midtown yogurt or gelato or whatever it is place is gone? So I high-tailed it over to the new Golosi Artisan Pizza and Gelato place after work to see for myself. Well, thankfully, the gelato display is exactly the same as before. Phew. As for the pizza, I too cannot be the judge, because I haven't tried it yet. It certainly looked tasty. I would try it if they would extend the free gelato with 3" pizza purchase. But alas, that offer was only for their opening day, which sadly, I missed.

Update, 4.23.09
Read in April 16-23 TimeOut: Golosi's pizza crust is definitely not vegetarian. I am glad I didn't sample it. Should they label the pizza clearly that it is made with rendered pork fat??? I am officially grossed out. I also read that Golosi translates to "gluttons." Well that is a curious name for an eatery.

Luckily, the gelato display has remained exactly the same. Phew.
That was a close call.
Funny, I took almost the same picture last year.

The new Golosi, with the old Yolato gelato display.
A smart move on their part.

the pizza truck

I live in New York for the pizza. And the bagels. And the art. Probably in the reverse order. But for the sake of this post, I live in New York for the pizza. And not just for the pizza. For the mobile pizza. I mean, pizza from a truck! It doesn't get better than this.

Check out Vinny Vincenz heavenly slices at 14th and Union Square West (near the Diesel store). Contact Vinny Vincenz for the exact schedule. A Sicilian slice is around $2.50.

when it comes to pizza, brooklyn is truly heaven

Fresh from the oven. But wait until you see the oven! Scroll down.

I mean, where can you find a beehive oven in a street fair turning out fluffy clouds of heaven (that would be the pizza), like this? Only Brooklyn. I am so happy to live here.

I neglected to photograph the menu and get the name of this place, but apparently it is Lunetta, although they show no pizza on the menu. I hope my photos will be seriously sought-after once I post this. Read Dear Slice. I like how he signs it "Hasta la pizza." I wish I had thought of that.

Photographed at the Atlantic Antic this past Sunday. Read more Atlantic Antic food buzz on Chowhound.

on dekk for labor day weekend

As these beautiful summer evenings dwindle to a sad symbolic close this weekend, be sure to plan a special meal en plein air at Dekk on Reade Street in Tribeca. The food, cocktails, service and atmosphere at Dekk could not be better. And the bread basket! You should abandon your Atkinsian habits for their bread basket. Believe me. The bread is a dusted-with-flour loaf like you have never tasted, and served with an olive oil doctored with olive paste that is divine.

Our first experience at Dekk was for cocktails (mine, a delicious blackberry mojito). The space was open and inviting, so we wandered in and had a great time. Our second experience was an early Sunday dinner on the outdoor patio which overlooks the tree-lined street. We sampled a little bit of everything, including the Caprese Salad with fresh mozzarella, tomato and basil olive oil drizzle ($10.), a tuna tartare with avocado (around $14), and a hearty pizza with artichoke, olive paste and feta ($10).

Dekk is one of my recommendations for your 'vacation in the city' this Labor Day Weekend. Treat yourself to the sweet tastes of summer. If you are not in the Hamptons, that is.

more about the tg feast

As I said in the previous post, we got so involved in eating that I forgot to take pictures of the rest of the meal. So my husband and I "re-enacted" one of the courses last night: the pizza! It was tasty all over again. The things I do for this blog.

We had just as much fun gathering up all the ingredients as we did cooking them. To me, New York provides the greatest feast from all cultures everyday. We wanted our Thanksgiving table to reflect that. We hand-carried all of the provisions on the subway, thus getting lots of exercise before eating. Subway lines taken: G, 7, 1, F, E, L. Here was the menu for the rest of our TG feast.

main course

white bean, raosted fennel & tomato
thin crust pizza

zucchini, roasted red pepper, pepperoncini
thin crust pizza

mesclun salad with tomato, cucumber
& chickpeas tossed with
lemon juice, olive oil & shaved pecorino

roasted sweet potato

roasted asparagus in balsamic

pan-seared brussel sprouts & broccoli

dessert

apple pie wontons

cranberry relish

assorted greek cookies
(finikia & kourabiedes)
from omonia cafe, astoria

almond chocolate milk

coffee
black currant tea

two great new york foods

My husband and I have decided to eat only pizza and bagels (but not pizza bagels), from now on. Hey, when New York pizza and bagels are so super duper delicious, why not?

Have you been to Luzzo's yet? They make Napolitan style pizza that tastes like my grandmother used to make. After you taste pizza from Luzzo and bagels from Ess-a, you will understand why we are switching.

last minute getaways

Want to go somewhere for Memorial Day, but you forgot that it is this Monday? Well, there may still be hope for you. Try typing your destination into Hotwire* or Hotels.com for some cheap rates in your favorite city. I found an $88. per night deal for Saturday night in Philly (great coal oven pizza and great dining too). Of course the Amtrak rails have to stay up and running to make that trip possible. Stay away from the beaches. You will just get a sunburn. And a great big dose of overcrowded.

*If you have never used Hotwire, here is how it works. You pick the city, or location within the city, and it shows you prices and stars. You can choose a 3-star for $88 or a 5-star for $250. You won't be told what hotel you have selected until you pay. Kind of a Russian roulette of trip planning. But I have used Hotwire 3 times to good effect. Good luck!

particularly good pizzas

These pizzas warranted photo-documentation. Over the years, my husband I and have photographed many of our homemade pizzas. It is our nice strange tradition. We buy dough from the Italian bakery, or now, from the pizza place in our neighborhood, (because are you going to make a better dough from scratch? no.), divide it in half and each make a pie. His: a Mexican pizza with black bean cooked with chipotle peppers & Indian coriander sauce, and after cooking, sprinkled with chopped scallions, and avocado, and drizzled with yogurt (above). He is a good cook. Mine: a pasta pizza (an homage to Trio's in the North End, now closed) with roasted zucchini, broccoli, garlic, tossed in a roasted eggplant-red pepper sauce with the cooked fusilli, and lightly sprinkled with Locatelli. (below) Here is a link to the cheese online, although we bought it in Little Italy.
